New Stargate Series In The Works At Amazon
It has been officially announced (via Dark Horizons) that Amazon MGM Studios have greenlit a brand new Stargate TV series with Martin Gero as showrunner.
Gero, who was a writer and producer on the previous live-action shows in the franchise, Stargate: SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, said in his statement following the announcement that:
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
Details regarding plot and characters remain under wraps at this time, but the project is being dubbed a “bold new chapter”, hinting at the likelihood of a continuation of the existing continuity established from the previous shows instead of a fresh reboot. This approach will likely require the creation of new villains for the upcoming show, as fan favourite enemies from the existing continuity, such as the Goa’uld, the Wraith, the Ori, the Replicators, and the Trust, were all defeated in their respective series.
Stargate first began as a franchise in 1994 with the titular film, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. The film’s success spawned three beloved live-action shows, ending with Stargate Universe in 2011, a short-lived animated show titled Stargate Infinity and a low-budget web series called Stargate Origins in 2018.
This new series will mark the first in the franchise since Universe ended, but the project seems to be in safe hands as Gero will be joined by executive producers Tory Tunnell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) and Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi), as well as Roland Emmerich and the original film’s co-writer Dean Devlin. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who co-created and executive-produced the three previous shows, respectively, will also be on board as consulting producers.
