New Mortal Kombat II Character Trailer Drops
The new sequel based ont the hit video games is almost ready for battle.
Warner Bros has just released a teaser and character trailer for the upcoming video game adaptation sequel, Mortal Kombat II, the fourth feature adaptation of the original fighting video games, which started in 1992 by Midway Games.
The film is directed by Simon McQuoid, who also directed the first film in 2021, working from a script penned by Jeremy Slater.
Karl Urban, Josh Lawson, Max Huang, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanadaย will return to the film series, withย newbies including Martyn Ford, Tati Gabrielle, Ana Thu Nguyen, Damon Herriman, CJ Bloomfield and Adeline Rudolph.
The sequel will focus on Johnny Cage joining the Earthrealm champions in their one-on-one battles as they strive to fight against Shao Kahn in his mission to conquer all realms.
Speaking to Variety about the decision to include the character of Cage only in the sequel, McQuoid stated: “…heโs such a giant personality that he almost has his own gravitational field. The feeling was that he would throw [the first film] out of balance slightly.”
“I get asked about Kitana just as much as Johnny Cage. Thereโs a lot of interesting characters, story and material to work with. So we havenโt really dug into it; we just know weโre very privileged thatโs sitting there,” he added. “If we do get to that, and Iโm not saying we will, Iโm just saying if โ big โifโ โ then weโll go down that path.”
The first film grossed $84 million from its budget of $55 million, coming in as a reboot of the game’s adaptations after an unsuccessful release with 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation by filmmaker John R. Leonetti, which was a sequel to the 1995 adaptation by Paul Anderson.
Mortal Kombat IIย hits cinemas on May 8th.ย
