Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation Get’s A UK Trailer

It was the biggest award winning film at this years Sundance Film Festival and buzz for the film spread like wildfire triggering a race for distributors to win the rights. Fox  Searchlight won the race for Birth Of A Nation and this afternoon we get our first official look at the stunning first UK trailer , watch a slice of American history unfold…

From actor to director Nate Parker’s director feature debut is ready to take it’s long road to cinematic stardom, a film that’s coming with great buzz. It maybe nearly 6 months from it’s UK release date, an uprising doesn’t happen of night!

Set against the antebellum South, The Birth Of A Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

Sadly racism is still rife not just in USA but worldwide, its something that’s sadly crept back into British society too with the recent Brexit. Anyone expecting a modern take on D.W Griffith’s 1915 film of the same name this version will be glad to see this film highlight’s the suffering, the struggles telling the story from a different perspective. This film won’t promote the racist ideologies of Ku Klux Klan, if anything will highlight their atrocities and why they should never be given a platform ever again.

It’s ambitious film for a first director and also taking up the film’s lead role, following the character from a young child born into slavery. To the man who becomes a preacher to lead the uprising, Nat Turner the preacher who was also the same character in 1915 version and Parker hopes his version will be a reclamation of a title.I think we can clearly say Nate Parker will be in line for Awards and rightly so.

The Birth Of a Nation is set for an UK&Irish cinematic release on 20th January 2017 (7th October USA)possibly via London Film Festival in October. The film stars Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union.
