MUBI Set To Release Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta in The UK
Cannes Bound film is heading to Arthouse Streaming service in the UK and Ireland
Arthouse boutique distributor and Streaming service MUBI have announced they have picked up the UK and Irish rights to Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta.
The film was originally heading 2020 Cannes Film Festival, that all changed thanks to Covid-19. This festival is a go and will receive its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 9th July.
This is the latest film from the maverick filmmaker Verhoeven, following the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning Elle. Internationally the Dutch filmmaker renowned for such films such as Basic Instinct, Turkish Delight, Total Recall, RoboCop, Starship Troopers and Showgirls.
Inspired by the book Immodest Acts, written by historian Judith C Brown, the film stars Virginie Efira (Elle, In Bed with Victoria, Sibyl), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Red Sparrow, Swimming Pool), Daphnรฉ Patakia (Nimic), Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded, Catwoman) and Olivier Rabourdin (Eastern Boys, Of Gods and Men), and was co-written by David Birke, who partnered with Verhoeven to write Elle. Set in the late 17th century and inspired by true events, the film follows a woman who joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a plague ravages the land that surrounds it. Capable of performing miracles from an early age, Benedettaโs impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.
This is the latest film to join MUBI‘s ever growing theatrical releases coming the UK and Ireland. Including Kelly Reichardt‘s First Cow (our review), which is in UK cinemas from Friday 28th May. Others include Ben Sharrockโs BAFTA nominated Limbo, Michel Francoโs New Order, Ninja Thybergโs Sundance hit Pleasure, Cรฉline Sciammaโs latest film Petite Maman. Previous theatrical releases have included Bacurau from Kleber Mendonรงa Filho and Juliano Dornelles, Luca Guadagninoโs Suspiria and Border from Ali Abbasi.
Benedetta at this stage doesn’t have a confirmed cinema just yet.
