Moana 2 Crosses $1 Billion At Global Box Office

Moana and her sister ready for adventure

Following its theatrical release in November, Disney’s Moana 2 has officially crossed $1 billion at the global box office. The animated musical adventure, originally conceived as a series for Disney+, has become the third film from the studio to cross this threshold in the last year. Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine hit the $1 billion mark earlier in 2024, cementing the sequel in a series of huge commercial successes for the company.

A sequel to 2016’s Moana, the film follows the titular character (Auli’i Cravalho) and her demigod sidekick Maui (Dwayne Johnson) as they assemble a wayfinding crew to break an ancient curse and reconnect people across the ocean.

Although the film received mixed reviews upon its release, it certainly didn’t disappoint at the box office. Moana 2 generated $135.5 million in the United States on its three-day Thanksgiving opening weekend, accumulating a record-breaking $389 million worldwide. It has now gone on to gross $445.1 million in the United States and a further $567.1 million in other territories, bringing its worldwide total to a staggering $1.01 billion.

In addition to its massive commercial success, the film has been nominated for various prestigious awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Animated Motion Picture (both results pending).

Moana 2 is still playing in cinemas and is expected to stay on the big screen until February/March when it will most likely make its way to Disney+.
