Meryl Streep Says “Chick Flick” Label Has “Not Worn Well”
Ahead of the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep is reflecting on changes in the film industry since the release of the first movie 20 years ago.
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Wednesday night, Streep and Colbert discussed how the original The Devil Wears Prada movie was labelled a “chick flick” and hardly given a budget.
โThat designation has kind of not worn well after Barbie and Mamma Mia and other films that completely catch the studios by surprise that people want to see them because they have women in the centre of the story,โ Streep told Colbert. โSo we had to scrabble for our budget.โ
Streep then went on to add that this is something she has discussed with Barbie director Greta Gerwig, with whom she previously worked on Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women and is rumoured to be working with again on the director’s upcoming Narnia adaptation for Netflix.
โThat was true with Barbie a little bit, in comparison to what they spend on other films,โ she said.
However, Streep says cost wasn’t a concern this time around for The Devil Wears Prada 2. “This one, honey, they spent the money!โ she told Colbert.
The sequel sees the return of Meryl Streep as powerful fashion editor Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as her former assistant Andy, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, andย Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling. It picks up with Andy returning toย Runway Magazine after 20 years to face the current crisis in print journalism.
