Kate Winslet To Lead The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum

Kate Winslet joins The Hunt for Gollum

Kate Winslet will join The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in a role described as the female lead. Director Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the trilogy, persuaded Winslet with the help of original director Peter Jackson, reports Deadline.

The Oscar-winning actress (Titanic, Avatar: Fire and Ash) will join the returning Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Serkis himself, who will reprise the titular role along with directorial duties. Wood and McKellen will play Frodo Baggins and Gandalf, respectively. They were last in these roles for 2003โ€™s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Word this week, in addition to Kate Winslet, was that Anya Taylor-Joy (Dune: Part Three) and Leo Woodall (Nuremberg) were both rumoured to be joining the cast, with Woodall linked to the younger version of Aragorn. It was unknown who Taylor-Joy would play as there were reportedly two big female parts – one being a younger version of Liv Tyler’s Arwen, which would make more sense for her than Winslet – so maybe those rumours might be true.

The film, set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, is based on legendary author J.R.R Tolkienโ€™s footnotes. The story centres around Aragornโ€™s quest to catch Gollum before the latter can expose the Ring to Sauron. Serkis has handled pre-production in both New Zealand and Los Angeles, and filming is scheduled to begin in May. Warner Bros. will produce the film, scripted by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Jackson will be involved with the film in a production role. Walsh and Zane Weiner will join him.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to be released in the UK on December 17th, 2027.
