Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice Reboot Goes Full Throttle Ahead

Universal Pictures has finally agreed on all deals related to director Joseph Kosinski’s reboot of the popular 1980s cop thriller series Miami Vice, and the two leads have been officially signed on to play the iconic police duo.

Rumoured for months, the now official casting sees Oscar Winner Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) secured to play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Oscar Nominee Austin Butler (Elvis) secured to play James “Sonny” Crockett in the new version of the series, one that will be slightly different to the more traditional remake made by Michael Mann in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the leads. The film will be called Miami Vice ’85.

Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas led the original series, which ran from 1984 to 1990.

According to Deadline, the film “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style in everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Nightcrawler Oscar nominee Dan Gilroy is writing the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive-produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. The film will be produced by Dylan Clark and his Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski.

The next casting will no doubt be around the antognist in the film, and there has been strong rumours that Kosinski wants none other than Tom Cruise to take that role, with rumours first appearing late last month about his potential involvement.

Before then, Jordan will be seen in a new remake of The Thomas Crown Affair – which he also directed – alongside Adria Arjona and Kenneth Branagh; while Butler stars in Enemies alongside Jeremy Allen White later this year.

Miami Vice ’85 is set for cinemas on August 6th, 2027.
