Austin Butler is reportedly in early negotiations to star in director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming film reboot of the classic 1980s TV series, Miami Vice.
According to Variety, Butler would partner with Michael B. Jordan, who is in talks to play Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, alongside Butler’s Detective James “Sonny” Crockett.
The roles were originally played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the landmark TV series and later by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation. Miami Vice 2006 is set to revisit the 1980s by exploring “the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami”, taking inspiration from the show’s pilot episode and first season.
Kosinski, who successfully rebooted existing franchises with the blockbusters Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, is directing. Dylan Clark and Kosinski are producing, with a screenplay penned by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy.
Production is expected to begin next year, with the IMAX-filmed movie currently slated for an August 6, 2027, release from Universal Pictures.
Butler’s career has skyrocketed following his Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. His career now includes a range of roles, including his breakthrough in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and his villainous role in Dune: Part Two.
Meanwhile, Jordan most recently starred as twins Stack and Smoke in this year’s hit film Sinners. His credits also include Creed, Black Panther, and more.
