Jordan Peele’s Get Out Tops Sight & Sound’s Best Films Of 2017 List
Film critics of the world, unite!180 of them united to deliver the 2017 Sight & Sound’s Best Film Poll, with Jordan Peele‘s Get Out topping the list. You would think the runner-up would also be a film, wrong it’s David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks: The Return.
The much raved about horror film, Get Out, released in March, addresses race in America in a refreshing, funny and unflinching manner. Cult comedian Jordan Peele has spoken about the timing of his film, following the presidency of Barack Obama and the killing of Trayvon Martin by police, sparking race riots and civil unrest. While playing with classic horror film tropes, the film references the taboo of inter-racial couples, the slave trade, suburban racism and police brutality.Raoul Peck‘s brilliant I Am Not Your Negro was in joint 16th place with Dee Reesโ period drama, Mudbound. A movie that was praised at Sundance Film Festival, that distributor was willing to buy apart from Netflix. Now the movie is been hotly tipped to be a favourite to nab itself some Oscar nomiations.
Sight & Sound, the BFIโs international film magazine asked the critics to vote for their top five film, TV and artistsโ moving image releases from the year. The first time film and TV critics, programmers and academics from all around the world have voted a TV series. David Fincherโs Mindhunter also made the list as did the second series of Jane Campion‘s Top of the Lake: China Girl.
With this been The BFI’s Magazine, it’s no surprise the list is very Arthouse friendly with Luca Guadagninoโs coming of age drama Call Me by Your Name, voted 3rd place. Andrey Zvyagintsevโs Loveless , Good Time, A Ghost Story, mother!, Personal Shopper,Lady MacBeth, and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here.
The full results will be available today in the January 2018 issue of Sight & Sound and online at www.bfi.org.uk/best-films-2017
