Jim Carrey Set For The Jetsons Movie; Colin Trevorrow Directing

“Jane, stop this crazy thing!” Hanna-Barbera’s cult classic animated series The Jetsons is finally taking flight with rubber-faced Jim Carrey in a central role.

Variety has announced that Carrey will be pairing with Jurassic World filmmaker Colin Trevorrow on the much-delayed live-action Jetsons project. Originally aired in 1962, the series revolved around George and Jane Jetson, their children Judy and Elroy and their dog Astro, all of whom lived in Orbit City.

One assumes that Carrey will be playing George Jetson, although casting details are yet to be confirmed. There was a feature-length adaptation of The Jetsons in 1990, directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, with the voice cast including the legendary Bugs Bunny actor Mel Blanc. However, subsequent attempts to get the property off the ground have stalled, with filmmakers such as Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) thrown into the mix.

George O’Hanlon originally voiced George Jetson, and Penny Singleton voiced Jane, with Yogi Bear voice artist Daws Butler chiming in as Elroy. Images from the series are now iconic, most famously the family’s futuristic flying bubble car, which is said to have anticipated many subsequent science-fiction trends.

Carrey’s most recent appearances include his turn as Doctor Robotnik in the hit Sonic the Hedgehog films. One of the biggest comedy stars of the 1990s and 2000s, Carrey’s roster of comedic blockbusters includes the Ace Ventura films, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Colin Trevorrow and Jim Carrey will be uniting with Warner Bros for the project, although a release date has yet to be announced.
