Jesse Plemons To Play Plutarch Heavensbee In ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping’

The new Hunger Games has its leads

It’s been announced Jesse Plemons has been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The news was reported by Deadline, among a flurry of key casting announcements for The Hunger Games prequel. Previously announced cast includes Joseph Zada who is set to play protagonist Haymitch Abernathy, and Whitney Peak as his lover Lenore Dove Baird. Also announced was Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as Maysilee Donner, Haymitch’s fellow District 12 Tribute and unlikely ally. As this is a prequel, Plemons will be portraying a much younger version of Heavensbee, a cameraman still years away from becoming head gamemaker.

The actor will have big shoes to fill, as the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, The Master) previously portrayed the character in the original series. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Parts 1 and 2 were the actor’s final film roles.

Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of The Hunger Games twenty-four years before the original film’s trilogy.  Sunrise on the Reaping focuses on Haymitch Abernathy’s games, the Fiftieth Hunger Games. Also known as the Quarter Quell, these particular games have their own special set of twists.

Jesse Plemons is a critically acclaimed actor who first broke out as Landry Clarke in NBC’s Friday Night Lights. Since then the actor has made memorable appearances in Breaking Bad, Kinds of Kindness and Killers of the Flower Moon. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in 2021’s The Power of the Dog. Interestingly, Plemons previously portrayed Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s son in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2012 feature The Master, so The Hunger Games casting team is not the first to see the resemblance between the pair.

Jesse is one of the most talented actors of his generation, with a proven record of picking his roles selectively,” Erin Westerman, co-president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group told DeadlineWe are honored that he has chosen to bring his own take to one of the most fascinating figures in Panem, and feel that his previous collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman makes it all the more special. His Plutarch will be both a tribute to the character fans have already come to know and a portrayal he makes his own. We can’t wait for audiences to see it.”

Nina Jacobson, who has been a producer on the franchise since the original The Hunger Games, also gave a quote on Plemons casting. “Jesse has been one of my favorite actors since I first saw him in ‘Friday Night Lights” she said “We knew from the start that only an actor’s actor could play a young version of Plutarch. Jesse was the dream from the start and we couldn’t be prouder to have him join the Hunger Games family.”
