Sydney Sweeney to Star, Jon M. Chu to Direct ‘Split Fiction’ Film Adaptation

Sydney Sweeney lit a match in Euphoria

Actress Sydney Sweeney is teaming up with Wicked’s Jon M. Chu to adapt Hazelight Studios’ Split Fiction for the big screen.

According to a new report by Variety, Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) will star in the adaptation, while Chu, still hot off of his critical and commercial smash hit, the Academy Award-nominated musical Wicked will direct. Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been tapped to write the script.

Split Fiction is a game from Hazelight Studios and publisher Electronic Arts, that follows authors Mio and Zoe, who become trapped in the worlds they wrote via an experimental simulation device. The game is a co-op adventure game that requires two players to collaborate via various mechanics such as split-screen combat, and differing abilities. The game also features themes of creative theft via machine which is sure to be a hot-button topic in Hollywood in the coming years. Because Mio is a science fiction writer and Zoe a fantasy writer the game blends both genres as the two struggle to survive in the world they created. According to Variety, it has yet to be decided which of the two leads Sweeney will be playing: Zoe or Mio.

The film adaptation will be produced by Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson’s Story Kitchen and Chu’s Electric Somewhere. The package is currently being shopped around to studios. Sweeney is set to executive produce the project. The actress has moved into producing in recent years having previously produced her feature Immaculate and her upcoming Christy Martin biopic.

An adaptation is big news for Split Fiction which was only released in early March. The game reportedly sold more than two million copies in the first week following its launch and sparked talks of a bidding war as early as late March.
