Interviews: Antonio Negret & Jett Klyne On Their New Horror, Shaman
Before the release of Shaman, we caught up with director Antonio Negret and star Jett Klyne (who you might recognise from WandaVision and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness as Tommy Maximoff) to find out more!
Shaman follows a family of missionaries who attempt to convert an indigenous community near a remote Ecuadorian volcano. Candice (Sarah Canning) has her faith tested in a sinister turn of events when an evil force possesses her son Elliot (Klyne).
The film was written by Negret’s brother Daniel and produced by both alongside Christian Rojas E. and Luiza Ricupero. Alongside Canning and Klyne, the film also stars Daniel Gillies, Alejandro Fajardo and a range of first-time indigenous actors.
In our conversation with Negret, the director discussed his filmmaking process, the experience of a remote location, and directing in multiple languages. Klyne provided some insight on his performance, relationship with the cast and crew, and the physicality needed for his role.
A missionary family travels to rural Ecuador to convert the indigenous population. All is going well until their son ventures into a forbidden local cave and comes back with a demonic spirit in tow. Candice (Sarah Canning) believes that an exorcism in the Catholic tradition will free her boy from the evil bonds that bind him. The local shamans know that this spirit is older than her religion and must be dealt with or the demon will take them all.
