HURT LOCKER the big Winner at the BAFTA'S 2010

Last Night saw the 2010 Orange BAFTA awards took place in London and as usual the turn out of movie celebs was as usual big. Everyone from movie royality to true royality in the shape of Prince William who is of course The BAFTAs new president taken over from Sir Richard Attenbrough.

To many people now this is the big one before the Oscars and soon as the award seasons nominations where annouced it was the old 2010 saying “Avatar or Hurt Locker?” on the end of everyones tongues. The Hurt Lock Locker was the night’s big winner.

The war flick notched up a total of 6 awards for Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Original Screenplay and of course the big one The Best Picture. As usual the media always seem to zoom onto the nearest rival that been James Cameron and he didnt seem bothered too much as he knows the Oscars have still to come. It was no surprise that Avatar did pick up the more technical awards such as Best Special Effects and Best Production Design beating its closest rival District 9.

British Film Industry did also do well on the night with Andrea Arnold collecting the award for best British movie FishTank. What a rise for An Education star Carey Mulligan who won the best leading female actress award beating the likes of Meryl Streep, Audrey Tautou, Gabourey Sidibe and Saoirse Ronan on the night. Colin Firth once again won best leading actor for his protrayl in A Single Man beating the likes of Jeff Bridges which some believe will win the Oscar award but the award everyone at The People’s Movies was over the “moon” about was the award for Outstanding by British writer, director or producer which went to Duncan Jones. After the disgraceful snub from the Oscars we where nearly shedding a few tears as Zowie Bowie aka Duncan Jones gave an emtional speech, he deserved it and it was two fingers up at the Oscar Nominee board.

As it was an night of many no surprise’s so when Christoph Waltz went up to collect best supporting Actor award for his part in Tarantino’s basterds well it was expected. Mo’Nique picked up the female support actress award in Precious when the movies director collected the award on her behalf. The only award I was surprised with was Orange Rising Star Award going to Kristen Stewart, not that Im bothered she won it it just shows the impact a bad movie as Twilight has on fans and shows you how dedicated & passionate there fanbase by supporting them even when things are bad.

Overall it was a good night for the British Film Industry and not much in surprises on the American movie contingent, so roll on the Oscars!!! Here’s the full list:
