Henry Cavill’s departure from The Witcher in 2022 came as a shock. Fans were confused by the choice to replace him with Liam Hemsworth after three successful seasons. But Lauren S. Hissrich, the creator and showrunner of the Netflix series, has finally shed some light on the decision.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hissrich revealed that Cavill’s exit was discussed “for a while” before happening. It seems the Man of Steel actor wanted to leave himself.
“He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to,” Hissrich said. “And for us, you don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do.”
Hissrich explained that the show wouldn’t end on Cavill’s account: “The show is bigger than one actor. It’s bigger than me. There’s a book series; there’s a video game. We are the third entry into this. So The Witcher lives whether or not we go.”
The show will conclude after a fifth and final season. Meanwhile, Cavill has started working on a new Highlander movie and the Warhammer 40,000 TV series.
The Witcher Season 4 will premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2025.
