Henry Cavillโ€™s departure from The Witcher in 2022 came as a shock. Fans were confused by the choice to replace him with Liam Hemsworth after three successful seasons. But Lauren S. Hissrich, the creator and showrunner of the Netflix series, has finally shed some light on the decision.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hissrich revealed that Cavillโ€™s exit was discussed โ€œfor a whileโ€ before happening. It seems the Man of Steel actor wanted to leave himself.

โ€œHe had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to,โ€ Hissrich said. โ€œAnd for us, you donโ€™t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they donโ€™t want to do.โ€

Hissrich explained that the show wouldnโ€™t end on Cavillโ€™s account: โ€œThe show is bigger than one actor. Itโ€™s bigger than me. Thereโ€™s a book series; thereโ€™s a video game. We are the third entry into this. So The Witcher lives whether or not we go.โ€

The show will conclude after a fifth and final season. Meanwhile, Cavill has started working on a new Highlander movie and the Warhammer 40,000 TV series.

The Witcher Season 4 will premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2025.
