The majority of the original cast will be returning including Dunham as Hannah Horvath. Also Allison Williams as Marnie Michael, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
Girls was a comedy show loved by the millennial generation as the fix was seen as a perfect satire of the millennial experience in 2010s. The show ran for six seasons between 2012 and 2017 with the show earning 19 Emmy nominations, winning 2 of them.
Girls help launch the career of Dunham, Williams and Adam Driver who played Hannah’s boyfriend Adam Sackler. There is no word yet that Driver will be returning as Adam.
โWe always said we would only return to GIRLS if there was a specific story we were burning to tellโ, said Lena Dunham. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldnโt quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking itโs pretty hard to get them to stopโฆ”
“Itโs rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being togetherโฆ and the chance to wear yellow meshโฆโ
โWeโre thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of oneโs twenties to the milestone of turning forty“. Said Amy Gravitt Head of HBO Comedy programming. “To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah is a massive understatement, but we know fans – old and new – will be happy to see how theyโve grown and relieved to see that theyโre still the โGirlsโ we knew way back when.”
Girls original co-showrunner Jenni Konner with Dunham won’t be returning. It’s early days for exactly what we can expect from this new series, might be more surprises still to come!
