Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Reboot for Netflix Will Get IMAX Run

According to Puck News, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation will be hitting around 1,000 Imax screens on Thanksgiving day 2026. 

In a new report by Puck News, it’s been confirmed that Netflix will break tradition and give Greta Gerwig’s Narnia film a full theatrical release. Gerwig’s film will be released on Thanksgiving Day 2026 on about 1,000 Imax screens exclusively for two weeks. Furthermore, the film will not appear on Netflix until Christmas, giving it a four-week theatrical window – setting a new precedent for Netflix productions. 

With Gerwig’s previous outing Barbie becoming the highest grossing film of 2023 at both the domestic and worldwide box office, it hardly seems surprising that Gerwig’s next film would find its way to cinemas. However, according to Puck this deal has actually been “months in the making” negotiated between multiple parties. They report that the “big yes” ultimately came from Netflix head Ted Sandros  “whose desire to placate a major filmmaker ultimately trumped his religious aversion to the multiplex”.  Netflix has committed to marketing the release as a tentpole movie and Gerwig will be shooting the film using both Imax and regular cameras. 

Greta Gerwig was first officially confirmed to have a two-picture deal with Netflix for a Narnia franchise in July of 2023 . Based on the books of C.S Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia, the beloved children’s fantasy series has sold more than 120 million copies, and the books have been printed in 47 languages. Details of Gerwig’s movie are being kept tightly under wraps, with no plot or cast having been announced. As of writing, even the specific book Gerwig is adapting has yet to be officially confirmed. 

One of the most recent updates on the project came from producer Amy Pascal who described the film as “a very new take on Narnia” and “It’s all about rock and roll.” In the same interview, Pascal confirmed Gerwig’s film will begin shooting in July 2025.

The Chronicles of Narnia is set for release in November 2026.
