First Look at Prima Facie Released Online by Sony
Sony Pictures has just released the official trailer for Prima Facie, a feature adaptation of the one-woman play by Suzie Miller.
It stars Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) as hotshot young barrister Tessa, whose personal life and career unravel after she is brutally sexually assaulted by a person in her law world circle. The process of seeking justice is given extra weight by the fact she has a track record of defending men charged with sexual assault. The accuser soon shakes her belief in the judicial system that was once the core of her whole identity.
It just debuted at TIFF to hugely positive reviews, with many praising Erivo’s performance. It’s directed by Susanna White (The Buccaneer, Andor), with distribution for the U.S. yet to be announced. It also features a magnificent supporting cast that includes Daniel Ings, Elizabeth Dulau, and Simon Russell Beale.

Whilst at TIFF, Erivo told Deadline, “I read the script, and then fell in love with the script because I loved the grey area that it dealt with. That Tessa wasn’t a straightforward human being. That she was complex in many, many different ways, and that she had a hand in the law. That she was having to deal with, and that that law then was dealt upon her. The navigation of all that, for me, was a really interesting thing to have to play and to have to deal with, and I saw it as a challenge and thought, well, I think this might be a good challenge to face.”
Prima Facie is set for a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland on November 13th.
