Film Review - Color Out Of Space (2019)

Wild to say the least but i basically loved every flagrant tone of this obscure HP. Lovecraft short story adaptation with an appropriately manic Nicolas Cage as an alpaca admirer about to go through a pink nightmare.
Nathan (Cage) has moved with his family from the city to a farmhouse in rural New England.

A beautiful wife and two children, they all seem to find their own patch to make the best of their new leafy surroundings.

Looking to a new life, things change dramatically after a meteor shower hits nearby that slowly begins to mutate plants, animals and the four family members themselves originally due to the tainted drinking water.

Directed by Richard Stanley, the auteur best known for being dismissed from the Australian set of Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) depicted in a terrific behind the scenes documentary, Lost Soul Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau.

He also made a great science-fiction oddity, Hardware (1990) however this is a return to the limelight if you will, a creation of body horror he clearly is passionate about.

Mother and daughter played by incredibly dedicated Joely Richardson and inspiring star in the making Madeleine Arthur have their own reaction to the horrific cosmic force, make up effects aside, these two are truly believable under inexplicable duress.

Cage brings fire and brimstone, evolving into an unpredictable head of the family obviously intent on creating a memorable if somewhat ambling character. This is no Mandy (2018) or it’s 30 year predecessor Vampire’s Kiss (1988) but Nicolas enthusiasts are sure to be delighted.

Sound and vision are the standouts here, vivid translucents don’t always make for a good movie however in this case, cinematic imagery is key.
