Fiery Conflict Brews in First ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer
The trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has been released online by 2oth Century Studios. The release follows the trailers, following debut at screenings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps last week. This is the first look at footage from the third instalment of James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise, scheduled to release in December this year.
The trailer seemingly picks up where Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) left off. It shows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children, Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss) continuing to live alongside the water-based Metkayina tribe. It introduces the Mangkwan Clan, a new tribe of Ash People led by the fierce Varang (Oona Chaplin), who appear to be allied with vengeful Recombinant Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Several shots show the Sully’s in peril again, and all signs point to all out war. The trailer ends with a chilling declaration from Varang to Kiri: “Your Goddess has no dominion here.”
Part three will also see the return of Bailey Bass, Jack Champion, Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis. Cameron directs from a script written with Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver.
Avatar: Fire and Ash comes after the huge box office success of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which earned $2.32 billion globally. It was the highest-grossing film of 2022 and the third-highest of all time. Avatar (2009) earned around $2.92 billion worldwide, and is the highest-grossing film of all time.
The film is produced by James Cameron, and will feature a posthumous producing credit for his long-term collaborator, Jon Landau. It will be distributed by 20th Century Studios/Disney. The Avatar story is confirmed to continue for a further two currently untitled films that are slated to release in 2029 and 2031.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will release on December 19, 2025.
