Ethan Hawke has played many roles, soon we can see him play the controversial abolitionist John Brown. HBO have released the Trailer for The Good Lord Bird, with Hawke a gun toting motormouth in US Civil War.

The seven-episode series is from Blumhouse Television and based on the National Book Award-winning novel The Good Lord Bird by bestselling author James McBride. Hawke plays John Brown the infamous Abolitionist who had an motley crew of soliders whose actions that would kick-off the US Civil War.

The series will be seen from Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictionalised slave boy who becomes a member of Brown’s army…

The series is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of Brownโ€™s motley family of abolitionist soldiers during Bleeding Kansas โ€“ a time when the state was a battleground between pro- and anti-slavery forces โ€“ and eventually finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry. Brownโ€™s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but was the event that started the Civil War. THE GOOD LORD BIRD weaves a humorous, dramatic and historical tapestry of Antebellum America, spotlighting the complicated and ever-changing racial, religious and gender roles that make up the American identity.

The series will also star Ellar Coltrane, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Beau Knapp, Nick Eversman, Jack Alcott, and Mo Brings Plenty. Also appearing will be Daveed Diggs,David Morse, Steve Zahn, Maya Hawke, Wyatt Russell and Orlando Jones.

The Good Lord Bird is set to air in the US on 9th August on HBO Showtime. The is no channel or launch date confirmed for the UK just yet.
