It has been confirmed that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and You star Victoria Pedretti are set to star in James Ashcroft‘s upcoming film When Darkness Loves Us, an adaptation of the 1985 novella which shares its title with the author Elizabeth Engstrom.
The horror film, written for the screen by Ashcroft, Hayley Sproull and Eli Kent, has reportedly been picked up by Bleecker Street and will also feature cast members Marlon Williams from Sweet Tooth and The Truman Show‘s Natascha McElhone.
When Darkness Loves Us’s official premise reads as “Sally Ann and Martha. Two women, searching for love. Finding terror. During a terrifying storm, a gentle childhood is destroyed by a twisted man who promises love but delivers nightmares.”
“In the lightless depths of an underground labyrinth, unseen creatures lie in wait for an innocent traveler, cold skeletal hands stretched out in welcome.”
The director has shared that his “passion for Engstrom’s story remains boundless” as well as citing the opportunity to adapt her prose for the big screen as “an absolute gift.”
“With When Darkness Loves Us, Liz never lets us forget that the actions of her characters are by turns both tragic and monstrous — no matter how sympathetic they may be,” Ashcroft adds. “But it’s their indelible humanity that can’t be so easily shaken off afterwards, and that’s when we find ourselves at home in the darkness with them.”
The filmmaker also holds credits on The Rule of Jenny Pen and the upcoming Alex North novel adaptation of The Whisper Man, set to star Robert De Niro.
