Edinburgh Film Festival 2022 Line-Up Will Get Us ‘Talking’
Edinburgh International Film Festival next month will celebrate it’s 75th edition. As promised the festival has announced it’s full line-up. A year that promises to get us ‘talking’.
The 75th Anniversary edition this year. The dynamic programme of cinema screenings, live performance and industry dialogues in Edinburgh in the heart of the August festival season. Most of all, every film you will be able to watch in person!
This year there will be 87 new features, 12 short film programmes, and two large scale retrospectives that celebrate the 2022 Theme of the 50th Anniversary of the Women’s Film Festival in new Creative Director Kristy Matheson’s inaugural edition.
Already announced are the opening and closing gala films. Edinburgh born Charlotte Wells critically acclaimed feature debut, Aftersun. Opening the festival on 12th August with the festival closing with After Yang. Kogonada‘s exquisite and playful film stars Colin Farrell and Jodi Turner Smith and brings the festival to a close in style. Comedy Nude Tuesday will be the Central Gala to complement the previously announced Galas.
10 international feature films with over 50% female Directors or Co-Directors for the brand-new competitive section for ‘The Powell and Pressburger Award for Best Feature Film’.
This competition of 10 films is composed of a mix of UK and Irish filmmakers and international talents and honours imagination and creativity in filmmaking. The films selected for our 2022 competition are daring, eclectic and genuinely speak to the creativity that’s central to the works of our award’s namesakes – Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Jan Gassmann’s 99 Moons is an erotic drama about insatiable chemistry. Scottish animators Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson star in and co-direct the World Premiere of the inventive documentary A Cat Called Dom.
Peter Strickland’s latest dark comedy Flux Gourmet starring Asa Butterfield and Gwendoline Christie . An irresistible ode to the perils of creativity. Flávia Neves’ refreshingly bold directorial debut Fogaréu and married co-Directors Josh Appignanesi and Devorah Baum’s documentary Husband.
Part surreal comedy, part love letter to Filipino action flicks, Martika Ramirez Escobar’s debut feature Leonor Will Never Die is as unclassifiable as it is tender. Andrew Legge’s WW2-set debut feature LOLA starring Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini and featuring an original score and songs by The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon.
Filmmaker Maha Haj second feature Mediterranean Fever which is a wry examination of mental illness and masculinity. Sinead O’Connor was adored and demonised with equal vigour in Kathryn Ferguson’s documentary Nothing Compares . Amanda Kramer’s Please Baby Please (whose Give Me Pity! also plays EIFF).
It wouldn’t be a festival without it’s strands. Edinburgh Film Festival promised to get you talking and in The Conversation you’ll get that. The headliner Lachlan McLeod’s affecting documentary Clean. Other highlights include the terror of motherhood in Huesera, the gooey gore of Sissy and the mystical western vibes of Saloum. Buckle up for Dae-min Park’s Korean vehicular thriller Special Delivery with a lead performance from Parasite star Park So-dam.
John Michael McDonagh returns to Edinburgh Film Festival with The Forgiven starring Ralph Fiennes, Jessica Chastain. Will Poulter, Naomi Ackie and Johnny Flynn star in the original and unique British musical heist thriller The Score.

Working alongside a talented team of programmers and festival producers to craft our 2022 programme has been joyous.
