DVD Review - The Unfolding (2016)

The Unfolding is the next release from the FrightFest presents label with Icon Films.
I have seen two of the titles so far and both have been fantastic. This was the second of the two. I loved it!

Following the story of Tam and Rose, a couple who are investigating a haunted house in the countryside of England. At the same time the world is in a state of panic as threats of Nuclear War is likely. As the days go by more and more unexplained things begin to happen, as a psychic connects with the spirits in the house things go from bad to worse, to extreme, meanwhile the political and global threat of the end of the world looms.

The Unfolding is one of the more unique horror films to come out of this year, with a lot of unexpected twists and turns, the film really showcased how a low budget horror film can really be the best kind of horror film.

It was rather scary that a film made in 2015 but set in 2016 was so grounded in the political aspects of this year. With so much going on in the real world right now, now where near as scary as the threats in the film, still having that in the film was actually pretty terrifying. Also considering that the film takes place in October when were in July was another scary thought.

I just loved how the film manged to have the fear factor, though having nothing much happen tell much later in the film. It is a rather subtle, slow burn film, which I actually appreciated, for the most part. It made it feel more realistic.

I will be honest, I was not to sure what to expect with this film, but I am so happy that I watched it and was given a chance to see it early as I totally loved it!

I will say that as slow as it is in the beginning, it is a great and unexpected pay off. I found myself really invested in the story and the characters and really just wanting them to be ok. I think this is the key to any horror film, or any film in general. Having a simple story throwing in a few twists and turns here and there, having a slow build up and then a great pay off. That is the perfect way to make a good and lasting horror film.

I even thought that the film was great by making a negative into a positive, a few times throughout the film the character of Rose kept saying that she wanted to leave, when at any time really she could have easily left. This was back up later in the film (without giving anything away) by having a reasonable explanation for why she stayed. Over all I really liked this film and don’t have many negatives to say about it.

I really think FrightFest have selected a good bunch of horror films to be their first load of films released under the Fright Fest presents banner.
