For six years now it’s been one of those “will they, won’t they?” games with Sony Pictures when it comes to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo sequel. We are fans of David Fincher’s remake of the popular Swedish crime novel which had Rooney Mara transform into computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace in the original Swedish version). Daniel Craig played Mikael Blomkvist the investigative journalist in a movie that was critically appraised .
Fans waited and waited for The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, the follow-up books to be adapted, but nothing materialised.  It now seems the wait for news of a sequel might be over as it looks like Sony Pictures may have found their director.
According to a report by Variety, it seems that Sony want Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez to bring the sequel to the big screen. The sequel that they want to be the next movie isn’t The Girl Who Played With Fire but the new fourth novel The Girl In The Spiders Web.
Stieg Larson who wrote the original 3 novels sadly died in 2004 and writer David Lagercrantz was giving a free reign to write the novel by the Larson estate. The movie will be penned by a Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) script but the question is will Mara and Craig return to reprise their roles?
The Girl In The Spiders Web, sees Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist reunite after one of them receives a phone call claiming they have information vital to America. Blomkvist asks for Salander’s help, but little do they know they are about to enter a world of spies, cyber criminals and a lot of world governments.
Lagercrantz looks to have kept Larson’s writing style with a free reign to the characters too as well as keeping the complexities that made The Millenium Trilogy books so popular. Rooney Mara said she would be opened to coming back to play Lisbeth once again, however, there has been no word about Daniel Craig. He maybe waiting to see what happens next with James Bond.
If Sony gets their man, it will be Fede Alvarez third feature movie, with Evil Dead remake and more recently Don’t Breathe. He’s already shown he has the capabilities to go dark, gritty and twisted.
