Box Office Report: Minions Dominate 4th July Long Weekend
It’s been a triumphant holiday weekend for Universal’s animated sequel, Minions and Monsters,ย by director Pierre Coffin,ย as theย Despicable Me spin-off, narrating the minions’ attempt to make a monster movie for Hollywood, has come in as the 4th of July weekend box office topper.
This number one spot has come thanks to global earnings of $159.8 million this weekend, split between a domestic gross of $61 million and an international one of $98 million. Nonetheless, these numbers don’t quite add up to the studio’s goal of $170 million for an opening box office gross, and this instalment comes in as the lowest opening weekend seen in the film franchise about a villain and his team of small, yellow henchmen.
The first film, 2010’s Despicable Me, saw opening domestic earnings of $56.8 million, while its follow-up earned $82.5 million on its opening weekend domestically. Meanwhile, the first Minions spin-off film, 2015’s Minions, opened to $115.2 million in America, while 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gruย opened to $80 million.
Other box office news sees the hot topic horror, Obsession, climb further up the ranks to reach a global gross of $400 million, combined from domestic earnings of $245 million and international ones of $157 million. This places filmmaker Curry Barker‘s supernatural tale as one of the most profitable films, from an initial budget of $750,000.
Following these new numbers, Obsession now sits as 2026’s seventh highest-grossing film, between Pegasus 3 and Hoppers.
Additionally, DC’s Supergirl has proven to disappoint the studio due to its box office numbers of $100 million, falling short of its budget of $170 million-$186 million. Pixar’s sequel, Toy Story 5, has now grossed a global total of $764.3 million to become the studio’s third highest-grossing 2026 release.
