Movies this year that have been aimed at a younger audience such as Pete’s Dragon, The BFG there’s hope in the world when it comes to loss (or lack off). In Juan Antonio Bayona‘s A Monster Calls, it will break your heart,as an adolescent escapism takes us into the world of monsters and fairy tales ,watch new UK trailer

We seem to forget about a child’s grief, pain and our hero’s life is turned upside down thanks to befriending a tree monster. Loneliness affects us all but for a child, it’s tenfold the anger will be unleashed as your heartstrings are pulled every direction. Forget the popcorn bring your handkerchiefs instead.

A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama from acclaimed director Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible”), based on the award-winning fantasy novel. 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith. Also featuring Liam Neeson who will star in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting monster of the title, and Sigourney Weaver as the maternal grandmother.

Liam Neeson pardon the expression might have a lot of wood but he is that Iron Giant, The BFG to young Conor a protector, majestic sonorous voice. Is he like a fatherly figure to Conor? It has a dreamlike feel to the film as well as a dark tone similar to Bayona’s The Orphanage. Are we looking at 21st Century Never Ending Story or even English language version of Pan’s Labyrinth?

A Monster Calls features an all-star cast including Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell and Sigourney Weaver, with newcomer Lewis MacDougall as Conor.

The movie is released in UK&Ireland on New Year’s Day 1st January 2017.
