Things go bump in the night, others will devour your soul, some will slice, dice eat your heart with a nice glass of Chianti. October has now arrived which can mean only one thing 31 Days of Horror has now arrived again. For the next 31 days, we will dive deep into the catacombs of horror to pick you a movie. Every day will be different ranging from the classics to the weird and wonderful. Many you might have heard of, some will be new to you. There will be personal favourites that you may like, others you may hate but they all will unleash those emotions that make us love horror.
Day 13 It can only be one movie, have a guess? Off course! It’s Friday The 13th! Let Ross Wilcock explain.
Friday the 13th is the iconic 80’s slasher film about a group of camp councillors who are planning to reopen an old summer camp – Camp Crystal Lake – Where a murder took place years before. As they begin preparations they all begin being stalked and slashed one by one with the survivors pleading for their lives.
This has to be without a doubt one of my favourite horror films, more so as it is just so fun and iconic, you can even put aside the cheesy acting. I can not think of a better review for today than this film.
The acting in this film lets face it isn’t great, but for the time and for the type of film it is it’s decent. I can tell you now it is a lot better than many of the slashers to come out at this time. I enjoyed the film for the overdramatic and then sometimes under dramatic acting. I think that is what makes this film what it is!
So enjoyable and such a classic. It is great for the dark nights we are getting now. I can not think of a better film to watch at this time of year. Especially with it being Halloween season an all.
We cant talk about Friday the 13th without mentioning the iconic series of somewhat questionable films that followed the 1980 classic. Though I will admit very much that I actually consider the first few films (1-4) actually pretty decent films, after that, however, well we won’t talk about those ones. I think it is important though to mention that some of the sequels are worth watching, and in fact, I have even spoken with horror fans who have preferred the second film to the original, which in many ways I agree with.
That doesn’t take away how awesome and gory this film is and just what it helps bring to the horror genre. Even though it was John Carpenter’s Halloween that brought the slasher genre into the mainstream, Friday is certainly a key figure in the genre’s success.
I personally think that regardless of whether it is Friday the 13th or not This is a damn good film to watch on Halloween!
If you have yet to see the original then do yourself a favour and get to it!
