Things go bump in the night, others will devour your soul, some will slice, dice eat your heart with a nice glass of Chianti. October has now arrived which can mean only one thing 31 Days of Horror has now arrived again. For the next 31 days, we will dive deep into the catacombs of horror to pick you a movie. Every day will be different ranging from the classics to the weird and wonderful. Many you might have heard of, some will be new to you. There will be personal favourites that you may like, others you may hate but they all will unleash those emotions that make us love horror.
Day 4 Ross Wilcock chooses Zombieland. A movie that highlighted horror didn’t have to be all blood and gore. It could be funny too and deliver one big unexpected surprise…
Starting Woody Harrison, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin. Zombieland follows the story of four outcasts who are the only remaining survivors (that they know of) during the apocalypse who band together to take down army after army of men eating Zombies.
This is one of my favourite films and still lives up to the hype. Every person I have shown this film to know hadn’t seen it had walked away loving it! Amazing to think this came out in 2009 and in a way was America’s answer to Shaun Of The Dead. At the time many critics battle to say what movie was better (we love both!), Zombieland did has the greatest unexpected cameo, their secret weapon…Bill Murray. Sadly by the time the movie was in cinemas, the previously released trailers spoiled the surprise. It was still one of the funniest cameos of recent times.
I think a lot of that was to do with the cast. The casting was excellent in my option. Casting the upcoming star like Emma Stone (Lala Land) was a great choice as she, of course, went on to star in the smash hit Easy A the year after this film’s release. This film was fun all throughout and really there isn’t too much I can’t say negatively about this.
It was paced well, acted well and had an honestly decent blend of horror and comedy.
Even now I still get chills in the final battle sequence and I remember the first time seeing this film I was on the edge of my seat. Even with the scene being pretty intense it was still given the correct comedic timing while managing to bring a horror feel to it.
Overall the film showcases the best acting of the four main stars I think as one of their highlights of each of there careers. Of course, many of them went on to do bigger and better things what with Emma Stone winning an oscar and being already previously nominated.
Zombieland is great for those film lovers who are not quite bracing enough for a horror film but can get a feel for the genre
Short and sweet with this review as all I can say is this film is worth watching this October!!
