Zack Snyder’s “Passion-Project” The Last Photograph to Have TIFF Debut

Filmmaker Zack Snyder is set to debut his fourteenth feature film, The Last Photograph, at the Toronto Film Festival this year. Cited as a “passion project”, the drama action thriller centres on a former DEA agent as he embarks on a vengeful mission in South America’s jungle as he searches for his missing niece and nephew following their parents’ murder. Accompanied by a war photographer who witnessed the killing, the agent finds reality and illusion slipping before his eyes as he is forced to confront his own past.

The Last Photograph was co-written between the filmmaker and Kurt Johnstad, and has reportedly been developed by Snyder since the mid-200s. Previous names attached to attempts to get the project filmed include Christian Bale and Sean Penn in 2011, alongside Gianni Nunnar attempting to negotiate and obtain rights.

The project was finally announced to be on the way in August last year and is now set to star Stuart Martin, Fra Fee, Jackie Kay, Costanza Andrade, Carolina Henao and Marlon Moreno.

“TIFF has the best audiences. They have the best screens,” Snyder shared in a statement given upon news of The Last Photograph’s film festival debut. “It’s a group of people that love cinema. They love the big screen experience. We shot this movie with the Airy 265, medium format, meant for the big screen.”

Previous and most recognised film credits include his input into the DCEU, before the sparkling new DCU took over, with titles including 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and his own mammoth cut of The Justice League in 2021, following a previous 2017 cut he had to part from. Snyder is also credited for the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, 2009’s Watchmen and 2006’s 300, with an upcoming Escape from New York remake in the works at Picture Company.

The 2026 Toronto Film Festival will open with Sian Heder’s Being Heumann, with additional releases including Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, Mark Fitoussi’s All About Corrine/Ni vue, ni connue, Courteney Cox’s Evil Genius, Susannah White’s Prima Facie, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden/Soudain, and Chris Rock’s Misty Green, before closing with Yan Lanouette Turgeon’s Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend/Villeneuve: l’ascension d’une légende. 

The Last Photograph will debut at the John Bassett Theatre on 13th September.

The 2026 Toronto Film Festival will run from 10th September to 20th September.
