The Wicker Man – The Final Cut Review

Whilstย theย third cut of Robin Hardy’s seminal classicย Theย Wickerย Manย is unlikely to present much that your typical aficionado has not seen before, audiences should still relish this chance to see this masterpiece onย theย big screen again.
Theย Wickerย Manย centres around Christian police officer Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) who receives a mysterious letter reporting of a missing child onย theย isolated Scottish island of Summerisle. Upon arrival,ย ย Howie witnessesย theย bizarre practices and rituals ofย theย pagan islanders before ultimately realising something far more sinister is afoot.ย
Sitting somewhere betweenย theย 84 minute original Theatrical Cut andย theย 99 minute Director’s Cut,ย Theย Final Cut (clocking in at 94 minutes) fuses elements of both to craft what Hardy dubsย theย finest and most complete version ofย Theย Wickerย Man.
Perhapsย theย most striking thing aboutย Theย Wickerย Manย is Anthony Shaffer’s sublimely constructed screenplay.ย Theย sense of foreboding and unease that it crafts is unparalleled in any other British horror film. Initially starting throughย theย uncooperative locals then gradually presenting us with grander, more horrifying shocks that build up toย theย film’s truly harrowing conclusion which Christopher Lee’s Lord Summerisle dubsย theย island’s ‘more dreadful sacrifice’.ย ย This conclusion is no less horrifying uponย theย dozenth watch – remaining one ofย theย most harrowing, stomach-churning scenes in British cinema.
Theย Wickerย Manย also showcases exactly how wide-rangingย theย horror film hasย theย potential to be. Incorporating elements of black comedy, eroticism,ย ย musical, thriller, and mystery –ย Theย Wickerย Manย is simply one of a kind.ย ย It is this combination of such eclectic filmic elements that makes Hardy’s film such a must-see cinematic experience. Fromย theย darkly comic dialogue (Lee’s delivery of lines like “Naturally! It’s much too dangerous to jump through fire with their clothes on!” upon explaining nudity during a ritual) andย theย riotously fun musical numbers (such asย Theย Landlord’s Daughter andย Theย Tinker Of Rye), toย theย sinister cult curiosities and exceedingly nasty conclusion –ย ย Theย Wickerย Manย is a film that plays with allย thehuman emotions.
Hardy’s occasionally heavy-hand directing may not matchย theย power of Shaffer’s writing, but no one can deny that all elements ofย Theย Wickerย Manย fit together perfectly. Whether just impressive coincidences (of which there are many) – liketheย wickerย man’s burning head falling to reveal a sinister and omnipresent sunset (or sun god?) looming overย theย islanders – or calculated choices (let’s give Hardy some credit),ย theย end result is without doubt a triumph.
One ofย theย reasons thatย Theย Wickerย Manย remains such a chilling force of nature is through some of British cinema’s finest performances. Edward Woodward leads with an abrupt self-righteousness and ferocious sense of determination, which when placed amongstย theย carnivalesque rites of Summerisle makes for a truly endearing watch.ย Theย final scenes reflecting Howie as aย manย fighting against his twisted fate are a testament toย theย great Woodward’s acting might.ย ย Theย Wickerย Manalso boasts one of Sir Christopher Lee’s most impressive screen appearances. Simultaneously charming and imposing, pagan leader Summerisle makesย theย perfect on-screen opponent forย theย devoutly Christian Howie.
Britt Ekland appears at her most alluring as Landlord’s daughter, Willow McGregor, whilst former-Mrs. Sean Connery, Diane Cilento , does an impressive job at playing devoutly pagan schoolteacher Miss Rose. ย
Seeing this beautifully restored print ofย Theย Wickerย Manย onย theย big screen is a must – never before or since has a film captured such a winning combination of horror, comedy, eroticism and thrills in such an iconic manner. Now come, it’s time to meet your appointment withย theย wickerย man.
