Watch Video Essays For Arrival Redefining The Genre And Language

arrival

No bones about it, Dennis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi drama Arrival is a delicate, heartfelt sci-fi movie and one that tested and rose above many cinephiles (and critics) expectations. We loved the movie (read our review here) and everyone we know loved it all had a unique reason for loving the movie. It never says your view of the movie is wrong or write but challenge your perceptions.

In Arrival, when mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team – led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Is Arrival an Alien invasion movie or something else? It’s a question those nice folks at Screenprism attempted to answer that question. Arrival is not your average sci-fi movie. In a new video Essay called ‘Dirty sci-fi’ they explore how the film departs from standard conventions of the sci-fi genre and the film’s deeper meaning.

In the second video essay on the movie’Language: Talking in Circles‘, they unpack the alien language in Arrival  and explain how the filmmakers visualised it on screen.

As Arrival is still in the UK,Irish cinemas we must warn you if you haven’t seen the movie we suggest you watch these fantastic videos after you see the movie as they may contain spoilers.
