A woman lies next to a dead man

Tomorrow (22nd August) Pigeon Shrine FrightFest will open with Joanna Mitchell‘s Broken Bird. The film marks it’s world premiere and directorial feature debut for Mitchell, today Catalyst Studios have released the film’s UK Trailer.

This film is based on on the director’s own 2018 short film Sybil who she co-directed with Tracey Sheals. The full length version is written by Dominic Brunt her own husband, whom many might know also as Emmerdale‘s vet Paddy. Broken Bird is a horror all seen from a female perspective, not the stereotypical female more someone complexed, dark, and even funny.

The film stars Rebecca Calder, James Fleet, Jay Taylor, and Sacharissa Claxton. Sybil (Calder) works at an undertakers. It’s a lonely job, with few perks. So she takes solace where she can. Her ‘dark desires’ however make crave for more and out of control.

Sybil Chamberlain is a quiet, creative soul. Her hobbies are taxidermy and poetry. She works in a funeral parlor with the deceased. She likes dead people. They understand her.

At just ten years old, she experienced trauma in a tragic accident which took away the family she adored. Now, an aching loneliness prevails in a void which she seeks to fill. But poetry and a vivid imagination provide an escape from the harsh realities of a lonely life.

Reality and reason are slipping away from Sybil and her โ€˜dark desiresโ€™ become more and more insatiable. Her fascination with the dead takes a dark and strange twist. And in a horrific climax of gothic proportions, she finds her own kind of happiness and contentment with the people she keeps as company – dead people.

Broken Bird will make it’s world premiere tomorrow 22nd August when it opens this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest. The film will get a UK cinema release from 30th August.
