Watch The Trailer For Shirkers Award Winning Documentary About A Stolen Film
Never judge anyone on face value no matter if they are your mentor. After spending months on your first film project with only for their mentor to steal the finished film. In 1992 this happened to Sandi Tan and her friends who created the stolen film and now Netflix will be showing Shirkers.
Today they release the official Trailer for the much talked about the documentary which won the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The story of Sandi and her friends indie film stolen from them after it was shot. This film promises to unwrap the mysteries, confronting the past and finding the 16mm film can in New Orleans.
Tan herself ended up moving to Los Angeles to become a writer and now she finally made her directorial with Shirkers. It sounds a crazy film and a story that had to be told and hopefully one we’ll be talking about for a long, long time…
Shirkers was a Singapore-made 1992 cult classic from teenage friends Sandi Tan, Jasmine Ng and Sophie Siddique โor it would have been, had the 16mm footage not been stolen by their enigmatic American collaborator Georges Cardona. More than two decades after Cardona disappeared, Tan, now a novelist in L.A., returns to the country of her youth and to the memories of a man who both enabled and thwarted her dreams. Magically, too, she returns to the film itself, revived in a way she never could have imagined.
Directed, written and produced by Sandi Tan, Shirkers debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival where Tan won the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award. The film was produced by Jessica Levin and Maya Rudolph, co-edited by Lucas Celler and Kimberley Hassett, photographed by Iris Ng, with an original score by Ishai Adar.
Shirkers will premiere on Netflix on 26th October.
