Rock and popstar careers and lives have been celebrated but when it comes to Dance music the DJ’s we sometimes forget they are also superstars of there music genre. One of those DJ’s is Steve Aoki one of dance music’s most hardworking, controversial and captivating characters. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary celebrations of globally renowned Dim Mak records, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead takes a compelling look into the life and mind of Grammy-nominated DJ. A documentary which is heading to Netflix in August and today we get get a soul searching trailer to promote the upcoming film.
The documentary was shot during the making of his Neon Future double album. It follows Aoki on his journey in the lead-up to playing the biggest show of his career at Madison Square Garden – the introspective doc examining the driving force behind his passion. Daredevil showman, former Olympian, Benihana founder and Steve’s looming father figure – the documentary centres around his complex yet loving relationship with his father Rocky Aoki.
In addition to this, the documentary follows the story of one of the most prestigious record labels from the ground up. Founded by Steve in 1996, Dim Mak Records has broken bands such as Bloc Party, The Bloody Beetroots, Klaxons, and The Gossip and has now put out over 500 releases to date.
Directed by Justin Krook, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead is a adrenaline-fueled yet heart wrenching documentary about one of the most eminent DJs of today. From producers David Geld (Chef’s Table, Jiro Dreams of Sushi), Matthew Weaver (Rock of Ages), Matt Colon, Happy Walters, Executive Producer Michael Mailis and Co-Producer Susan Wrubel – prepare to delve deeper into the life & mind of one of the worlds biggest DJs.
The documentary features cameo appearances from the likes of world tastemakers Diplo, Blink 182’s Travis Barker & Pete Tong. I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead will be available on Netflix UK&Ireland from 19th August.
