DVD Review - Stonewall (2016)

Charming, Funny and Deep.

A gay teenager in the 60s find himself joining the ranks in the Stonewall Riots which took place in 1969, Along with some colourful characters he goes on a journey of self discovery in a time where knowing who you are might get you killed.

Stonewall was a good film, I can honestly say that, although a little long. Many reviewers have criticised this film for many things. Although I see their points I can’t really understand where the hate is coming from. In many ways a lot of what they are saying could also be seen as positive,

The film was criticized for being to Tv movie like, in my opinion there is really nothing wrong with this, after all there are a lot of very good TV films out there. Another negative that this film received was that it didn’t look realistic enough, again that shouldn’t really be an issue (in my opinion) as long as there is a story there and the film is engaging and entertaining, then it has done it’s job.

Like I said though, my main negative would have to be that the film was just way to long. This easily could have been a 90 minute film, but instead it stretched to over 2 hours. I don’t think this is inertly a bad thing, I just felt like the film dragged at certain point.

I did though, really enjoy this film and would recommend it to people who are interested in the history of the LGBT community. This speaks volume and at the end of the day weather its good or not, the film does highlight something very powerful, and that is how far we have come in the world as a society.

Pride is now something that is celebrated across the world. The rights that people in the LGBT community have now is brilliant, though we still have a long way to go.
