A man looks at himself in the mirror in Minotaur

The critically acclaimed Andrey Zvyagintsev film Minotaur is set to make it’s UK debut at BFI London Film Festival next month. Today boutique distributor MUBI have released the powerful official Trailer for the film.

Andrey Zvyagintsev is known for his films Leviathan, Loveless, and The Return. He’s one of very few Russian filmmakers who is not scared to tiptoe into realism without remorse. Gloomy , cold, full of emotion and some critics comparing his style similar to Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky.

Minotaur is loosely based on Claude Chabrol’s 1969 drama La Femme infidèle (The Unfaithful Wife). Back in 2002 there was a Hollywood remake, Unfaithful starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. The 2026 version moves from modern day France to the heart of the Ukraine Russian war set in 2022. Moving from a drama to something more at home with a crime thriller and this being a Zvyagintsev film it will be bleak.

The film follows successful Russian CEO in 2022 who finds himself under siege. Corporate pressures are mounting, corruption of war and politics of the Ukraine Russia war. Gleb is brokenand things get worse for him when he finds out his wife is having an affair.

Whilst this film may not be the first choice for mainstream film fans, this looks to be one film that will appear on best films of 2026. We reviewed the film at Cannes, our writer James Morton described the film as “another gem from a director working at the height of his powers“.

This stars Dmitriy Mazurov , Iris Lebedeva, Boris Kudrin, Yuriy Zavalnyouk, and Varvara Shmykova.

Synopsis | Russia, 2022. When Gleb, a successful company director, finds himself under siege from mounting corporate pressures and an increasingly unstable world, the collapse of his carefully ordered life accelerates toward violence.

Minotaur will be released in UK, Irish cinemas 27th November (20th November in the U.S). Before then the film will play at BFI London Film Festival on 16th October.
