The Irish indie psychological horror thriller has been making big waves since it’s world premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Kate Dolan‘s debut feature has a few more festival appearances including Glasgow before it heads on general release.
The film finds us in a working class North Dublin housing estate , a young woman’s mother disappears without any explanation she returns. Her mother is however different , not herself and the woman is determined to find out the reason, only to unlock some dark family secrets.
This film is being sold as a psychological thriller, it is one with horror elements. Steeped in Irish folklore, demons, changelings, plenty of unnerving, atmosphere. Sign us up for this one!
You Are Not My Mother is a creepy and unsettling psychological thriller deeply rooted in Irish folklore. This highly-anticipated chiller – directed by Kate Dolan – debuted at Toronto International Film Festival to great acclaim and stars Carolyn Bracken (Dublin Murders), Paul Reid(Vikings, Ritual) and Hazel Doupe (Calm with Horses). Char’s mother, Angela, has inexplicably disappeared. All that remains is her abandoned car. When she returns home without explanation the following evening, it becomes clear to Char and her grandmother, Rita, that something is amiss. She might look and sound the same but Angela’s behaviour has become increasingly frightening, as if she has been replaced by a malevolent force. As Halloween night looms, a night steeped in ancient myth and legend, Char realises that she is the only one who can save her, even if it means potentially losing her forever. You Are Not My Mother won the Jury Prize at the 2022 Gérardmer International Fantasy Film Festival, and is due to screen at DIFF this month and GFF on 11th March.
The film stars Aoife Spratt, Ingrid Craigie, Jade Jordan, Paul Reid, and Hazel Doupe .
You Are Not My Mother is released by Signature Entertainment in UK Cinemas and on Digital 8th April. Wildcard will release it in Irish Cinemas 4th March, The film will make it’s UK Premiere at Glasgow Film Festival on 11th March [More info/book tickets].
