Watch second trailer for ‘sound design heavy’ horror Undertone
A second creepy trailer for A24’s upcoming horror film Undertone has just dropped, delivering more chills as we are “welcome[d] to the Undertone podcast, where we talk about all things creepy.”
The Canadian horror film’s official synopsis reads as: “A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness.”
Newcomer Ian Tuason will direct the project in his feature debut and has also penned the screenplay. The podcast hosts are played by The Handmaid Tales’ Nina Kiri and The White Lotus’s Adam DiMarco. Dan Slater and Cody Calahan have been signed on as producers with the companies Black Fawn Films, Slaterverse Pictures, Spooky Pictures, DimensionGate, KINO Studios and Feel Everything.
As explored in the trailer, this is a horror release which moves away from the tried and true found-footage concept (The Blair Witch Project, Lake Mungo, REC, Paranormal Activity) and the attempted ‘screenlife’ format (Megan is Missing, Unfriended, Searching, Host) and chooses to embed its storytelling into a more ‘audio-based’ exposition. Two podcast hosts receive an unnerving audio clip, one that “feels different” from all the “weird stuff heard before”.
Kiri’s role is the only one we see in flesh on screen, and all other characters are just heard via voice-over. Between this element and the eerie, disturbing whispers and screams captured on recording, sound design is set to take centre stage in Undertone.
Undertone will be released on 13th March.
