Watch A Beginner’s Guide to Chloé Zhao Video Essay

At the weekend the 78th Golden Globes took place digitally with plenty of dodgy Wifi, Zoom malfunctions and actors forgetting to press the mute. There was a few surprises, plenty who deserved their awards and one of those was Chloé Zhao.
Ever since her latest film Nomadland starring Frances McDormand hit the Film Festival circuit last year, critics praised her film left, right and centre. The Chinese filmmaker became the second woman to win best director award at the Globes with Barbara Streisland winning it in 1984 for Yentil. She was also the first Asian filmmaker to win the award, making her a big inspiration for other Asian females wanting to break into film or arts.
Unless you were fortunate to have seen Nomadland at last year’s BFI London Film Festival, we’ve only read the reviews or watched the trailers. We hope eager to see the film when it does finally arrive in the UK.

Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.
Nomadland has an 9th April UK and Irish release date, however that could be delayed a little longer to get the film into cinemas. If not expect it on Premium Video On Demand, nothing is set in stone with Covid-19 still affecting our daily lives.
