With many parts of the world and USA especially still struggling to control Covid-19, this news comes with no surprise. Warner Bros Entertainment have now put Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in a indefinite delay.
Variety broke the news which has shocked many worldwide, sadly not ourselves. With Covid-19 still wrecking havoc and infection levels dangerously high in the USA delaying the release indefinitely was a logical move.
The original plan was to release Nolan’s mysterious thriller on 17th July globally as a landmark release in re-opening cinemas. Here in the UK it’s only been some cinemas in England, a few in Scotland but globally it’s a different story. The release was pushed to 31st July and recently 12th August. With the USA the main core box office, Warner Bros want this to be a global release.
Warner Bros Chairman Toby Emmerich commented “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature. We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”
With the virus spreading like wildfire still in some parts of the world, it’s hard to say if Warner Bros will aim for a release in the Winter potentially Christmas time. We wouldn’t be surprised if Tenet will go for a 2021 release date. The report also says the studio are very flexible in the release of the film.
Emmerich’s statement also gave an insight on the studios process in deciding release dates – “Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates.”
With the virus in certain parts of the world under better control than USA, we could see the film released before it’s released Stateside. This news will be welcomed in Europe and Asia especially however if this does happen this may bring it’s critics who’ll see the move as ‘unfair’.
Tenet’s release delay might encourage other studios to delay their blockbuster releases likes of Dune, Mulan, Wonder Woman 84, Black Widow even No Time To Die. Despite it having a November release date, this film could yet find another new release date. In a recent interview on the Kermode & Mayo BBC movie podcast (listen here 15-15:10 mark) Q himself Ben Whishaw was under the impression the film will be delayed again. Like everyone he’s in the dark on what is going to happen.
In other Warner Bros new, the studio announced The Conjuring 3 aka The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do it, will no longer be released in September. The film has now been given a 4th June 2021 release date, down to the small matter of several re-shoots that were in place to happen back in April. With production not being able to restart , it would miss it’s 11th September release date.
