Gareth Edwards Not Coming Back For Next Jurassic World Movie

The director of Jurassic World Rebirth, Gareth Edwards, won’t be returning for the sequel to his 2025 film.
According to Deadline, Universal is preparing the next film in the Jurassic World franchise, but Edwards’ departure was due to creative differences with the studio. The hunt for a new director now begins. On Thursday, Universal released a statement that said: “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”
Jurassic World Rebirth was a hit at the box office, grossing $872 million worldwide, $340 million of which came domestically from the United States and Canada.

The film takes place “Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion.” It saw “covert operations expert Zora Bennett [who] is contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”
It starred Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend. Bailey, Ali and Johansson are all expected to return for the sequel, which is planning to shoot in 2027. David Koepp has reportedly written the most recent draft of the script.
The Jurassic franchise as a whole has seen many legendary names pass through it, such as Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Attenborough and many more. Steven Spielberg, Joe Johnston, and Colin Trevorrow are amongst the names that have directed films in the series.
