Vertigo Releasing Giving Surge Starring Ben Whishaw Getting UK May Release

After making big steps at Sundance Film Festival in 2020, Aneil Karia‘s (Beat, The Long Goodbye) debut feature Surge is set for A May UK cinema release.
Vertigo Releasing are set to release the film that stars actor Ben Whishaw (Paddington, the James Bond franchise). The film’s world premiere at Sundance in the Competition Strand saw Whishaw win a Special Jury Award for Acting.
The London based drama sees Whishaw as Joseph, who is trapped in a soulless job. living a life devoid of emotion and meaning, however an impulsive act of rebellion, Joseph unleashes a wilder version of himself. He is propelled on a reckless journey through London, ultimately experiencing what it feels like to be alive.
Karia says of his protagonist, “Though Joseph might seem to be a unique case, I hope that his story is speaking to something much more universal. Now more than ever it feels like we have had enough of surface-existence and are yearning for a deeper more present experience of the world. I hope watching this film feels like a visceral and meaningful trip.”
Like many up and coming filmmakers many of their early projects come from short films. Surge follows a similar concept to the director’s 2013 short Beat which also starred Ben Whishaw.
We’re still waiting on the UK Trailer, there is an American/Festival Trailer, check it out
The film was developed with the support of BBC Film and Creative England, via BFI NETWORK using National Lottery funding.
Surge will be released in the UK and Ireland from 28th May 2021, hopefully in cinemas and on Digital Platforms.
