Unresolved Tensions, and Dreamers In MUBI June Line Up

The Summer might be coming, MUBI like every month work to deliver you great films for your viewing pleasure. We are 7 days away from a new month and the streaming service for June will have a month of unresolved tensions and dreamers.

MONICA

Andrea Pallaoro’s invigorating Monica (2022) follows trans performer Trace Lysette as the titular Monica, a woman who hesitantly returns to her Midwestern hometown to care for the mother, now battling dementia, who once kicked her out.

Upon returning to her estranged family, Monica must once again confront the feeling of being a stranger within her own home. Pallaoro’s account of being an outsider is used as a platform to gently probe the alienating sensation one can feel when failing to meet the conditions set by one’s family, and Monica must now confront unresolved tensions and embark on a path of healing, reconciliation, and acceptance.

IO CAPITANO

Matteo Garrone’s Oscar nominated Io capitano (2023) follows the migratory journey of two Senegalese teenagers leaving their home of Dakar for Italy. On their journey, they experience both the immense danger and beauty of the desert, the horrors of Libyan detention centres, and the perils of the sea which obstructs their pursuit of a better life.

Garrone blends the reality of the teenagers’ journey with their dreams of the future, creating a labyrinthine account of migration that grants its intrepid subjects dignity while highlighting the bravery that goes into the decision to traverse the world.

Tracing the lineage of queer film history, A Place of Our Own: Queer Spaces honours the subversive, passionate, and often irreverent realm of queer cinema, its people and spaces. From Leontine Sagan and Carl Froelich’s sapphically charged Mädchen in Uniform (1931) to Jennie Livingston’s groundbreaking Paris Is Burning (1990), this collection revels in the resilience of queer stories and commemorates the LGBTQ+ icons from history and around the world who have eternally paved the way.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: TWO BY JAN ŠVANKMAJER

Surrealist Czechian Jan Švankmajer dazzles the mind with these two fever dreams: Alice (1988) retells the timeless Lewis Caroll story of the girl who falls down a rabbit hole and enters a psychedelic parallel dimension, but this time the tale’s uncanny characteristics are taken to new heights with the experimental intermingling of live-action performance and stop motion graphics. The preoccupation absurdity continues with Little Otik (2000), a charming look at the nature of parenthood through the bizarre: an infertile couple adopt a tree root as a child, however it soon comes to life and develops an appetite much larger than the average child…

THE DREAMERS

Ever the provocateur, even in his later years, Bernardo Bertolucci delivered on his specific brand of steamy erotica. The Dreamers (2003) takes us back to Paris in the 60s, where American student Matthew (Michael Pitt) meets the beautiful twins Theo (Louis Garrell) and Isabella (Eva Green). They bond over a collective cinephilia and quickly become a close-knit group, spending hot and intimate summer days together inside the twins’ bohemian flat.

While the trio get to know each other in increasingly transgressive ways, the May ‘68 student riots rage outside, and the trio embark on a sensual and unforgettable journey together with the spirit of revolution as an influential backdrop.

[Short Film Big Names] Ira Sachs’ playful Lady (1993) follows the day-in-the-life of an unnamed redhead as they go about their day making phone calls and delivering revelatory internal monologues while dressing. Our conception of gender is challenged by Sachs’ intentionally ambiguous blur of film styles, a poetic approximation of the protagonist’s fluid exploration of what it means to be a woman.

[Brief Encounters] Huw Lemmey & Onyeka Igwe based Ungentle (2022) upon extensive research of famous historical operatives from the mid–20th century: from Anthony Blunt and Guy Burgess to Noël Coward and Hardy Amies, the film explores the tensions between loyalty and lust that ran parallel in the lives of spies and gay men.

[Brief Encounters] Nans Laborde-Jourdàa’s Boléro uses the spirit of the dance itself to tell the story of Fran, a queer man visiting his hometown to rest and visit his mother. Following the jerky rhythm of the bolero dance, he taps into memories and desires which lead him and the whole village to a joyfully chaotic climax.
