To many Sherlock Holmes is seen as the greatest ever fiction sleuth but in reality he’s not the oldest. At 19 years old Matthew Gregory Lewis wrote THE MONK(Le Moine) a way back 307 years ago in 1796 amazing to realise the Cult gothic novelis finally made it to the big screen with popular French actor Vincent Cassel (Mesrine, Dangerous Method, Black Swan)playing our Capuchin Monk Detective. The novel was such a hit when it was first published during the Surrealist movement despite been renowned for its horrific graphic imagery but now the film is here after several failed attempts Dominik Moll has finally brought the film to the big screen.

The rise and fall of a Capuchin Monk in 17th century Madrid.Abandoned as a baby on the steps of a monastery and raised in strict Capuchin fashion, Ambrosio has become the most famous preacher in the country. While large crowds from all over the country come to hear his mesmerizing sermons, heโ€™s also bitterly envied for his success by certain fellow monks.
Convinced of his virtue and righteousness, Brother Ambrosio thinks he is immune to temptation…
Until obscure events start terrorizing the monastery. Could they be connected to the unexpected arrival of Valerio, an apprentice monk who has the miraculous gift to relieve Ambrosioโ€™s splitting headaches and hides his disfigured face under a wax mask? Adapted from the eponymous cult classic Gothic novel.

Check out the official UK trailer below with the films poster, Metrodome are doing the honours with the UK release of the film and it will be heading to British&Irish cinemas April 27th. Followers of Cinehouse and The Peoples Movies may recognise the reviewers name on the films quote (and poster) which is of Cleaver Patterson, who is a freelancing film writer who does write for ourselves,He reviewed the film for Diabolique Magazine, so a big well done to Cleaver!
