Time To See The World In The Colour Purple First Trailer

The Color Purple out in UK Cinemas 26th January 2024

In 1985 Steven Spielberg gave us The Colour Purple earning multiple awards including 11 Oscar nominations. A lot has happened in the last 38 years, including the film coming an stage musical and in 2024 the screen version will be released.

Today Warner Bros Pictures has released the first official UK Trailer and it’s time to see the world!

The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Fantasia Barrino. Oprah Winfrey who starred in the original film is onboard this one as a producer next to Spielberg with Ghanian musician filmmaker Blitz Bazawule directing.

Watching the trailer who will notice Halle Bailey who also stars as Ariel in the Little Mermaid live action version coming to UK cinemas this week. Bailey plays Nettie who was played by Akosua Busia in the original with Barrino as Celie who was played by Whoopi Goldberg. It’s astonishing to the original film garnered so much acclaim, but no Oscars to its name could that change with this version?

Check out the trailer below!

This musical version of The Colour Purple (or The Color Purple), follows the story and struggles of an African American woman (Barrino). Suffering life long abuse from her step father, husband and many others living in the Deep South of America. It’s also a story of the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond and one sister trying to find her identity.

It’s a powerful story, never seen it as a musical. If we going by the footage we see in the above trailer we have nothing to worry about. Looks like it will pay homage to the original source with a powerful rendition.

The Colour Purple will be released in UK and Irish cinemas 26th January 2024 (USA is the 25th December).
