The Spaceballs Sequel Gets A Release Date
May the Schwartz be with you again in 2027
An exclusive report shared by Deadline has confirmed the release date for the upcoming Spaceballs movie, a sequel to the original 1987 release by Mel Brooks, with Josh Greenbaum directing from a script written by Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit.
The original Spaceballs flick is a space-opera parody which spoofs several iconic, definitive sci-fi releases, including George Lucas’s Star Wars, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek, Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett’s Alien, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Franklin J. Schaffner’s Planet of the Apes. It focuses on a mercenary and his alien sidekick rescuing a princess from a threatening band of evil forces, known as the spaceballs, who find themselves stranded on a desert moon.
The film starred the talented cast of Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Daphne Zuniga. Supporting cast members include Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, and Lorene Yarnell, as well as a voice cameo by Joan Rivers and director Brooks appearing in two roles: an incompetent leader and a wise keeper who parodies Star Wars‘s Yoda.
Spaceballs went on to gross $40.3 million from a $22.7 million budget and has defied initial poor reviews (as well as winning Worst Picture at the 1987 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards) to grow into a cult classic.
It’s been confirmed that original cast members will return, and new names include Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan. Director Greenbaum is also credited for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and James Bond documentary, Becoming Bond.
The new Spaceballs film will launch into cinemas on 23rd April, 2027
