Sylvester Stallone Speaks Candidly About the Future of Rambo & Upcoming Prequel
Sylvester Stallone has shared his thoughts on the future of the Rambo franchise. Rising star Noah Centineo – who was set to play another muscle-bound hero in He-Man back in 2019 – will take on the role for the upcoming prequel, becoming the first actor since Stallone to do so.
In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Stallone spoke candidly about passing on the torch to Centineo. The film, titled John Rambo, will explore the characterโs early years before and during the Vietnam War.
On Centineoโs casting, Stallone commented: โI donโt know much about the young man, but this will be quite a challenge, I just hope they getโฆ I think it should be fantastic, I really do,โ
โI always thought of Ram as very highly popular. He was, you know, chapter of [the] football team. It was getting great straight A. I mean, he was just that kind of, kind of valedictorian. And the war broke him down. And turned [him] into this havoc machine, suffered from PTSD. So, I wanted to see that evolution.โ
When speaking to Screen Rant, the Rocky actor said of his initial plan for an AI-driven Rambo film: โI wanted to do the first AIโฆ not retroactiveโฆ but I wanted to rewrite history of the earlier Rambo because I wanted Rambo to be the nicest guy in the school, the valedictorian, the prom king, and all that stuff.โ
Stallone has been the face of Rambo for over forty years, spawning five successful films. Although the franchise is moving on without him, the action star has expressed his best wishes for its future. First appearing on screen in First Blood (1982), it was followed by First Blood: Part II in 1985, Rambo III in 1988 (at the time, the most expensive film of all time), before being resurrected in 2008 with Rambo and Rambo: Last Blood in 2019. The franchise has grossed over $819million worldwide.
