Suspiria Director Luca Guadagnino Set To Reboot Scarface?

Scarface (1983)

We’ve been talking about another reboot for Scarface for a very long time.  Everyone from Antoine Fuqua, David Yates, even David Ayer have been connected to direct. Now it looks like Universal Pictures may have found a new ‘little friend’… Luca Guadagnino.

Deadline are reporting Universal Pictures are going hand the keys to the longtime in making project to the Call Me By Your Name helmer.

Very few people know that Brian DePalma‘s 1983 version is a remake. A remake of the 1932 Howard Hawks film, which was set in Chicago Paul Muni playing gangster Tony Comante. DePalma’s version was set in Miami with Al Pacino as the iconic Tony Montana who loved to introduce his ‘little friend’ to anyone that he didn’t like. He would rise from rag to riches of becomes a drug kingpin. Both films the polar opposites in stories and levels of violence, connected through an immigration storyline.

The new version is set to be based in Los Angeles  with Joel and Ethan Coen writing the script. The report state The Coen Brothers have been working on the script for nearly 3 years. The brothers have focused their time on writing than directing, with Steven Spielberg‘s Bridge Of Spies and Angelina Jolie‘s Unbroken.

Luca Guadagnino is no stranger to remakes/reboots, when he rebooted Dario Argento‘s Suspiria in 2018. We loved that film, however it did get a mixed response from critics and cinephiles alike. It was his film before Call Me By Your Name that won him accolades including 4 Oscar nominations. He is currently working on that film’s sequel Find Me with original cast Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg returning.  We mustn’t forget he’s also developing a remake of Lord Of The Flies. He’s also executive produced the upcoming Michael Dweck & Gregory Kershaw documentary The Truffle Hunters.

We’ll take this one with a pinch of salt, simply down to how long this idea has been around. We’ll be really curious to see if he’ll go for a straight up gangster film or something with an Arthouse twist? So could we see Timothée Chalamet as the new Tony Montana?
